Friends,
My name is Tony Vargas—I’m thrilled to share that I’m stepping in as Executive Director of Square One—an organization reshaping leadership in our country by helping Democratic women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ candidates run for Congress in red and overlooked districts and states. At a time when our democracy faces immense challenges, I’m honored to be part of a team that’s committed to create a more representative government that reflects the full diversity of America. A heartfelt thank you to Miti Sathe for her leadership as founding Executive Director—I’m excited to build on your work.
My journey in public service began in the classroom as a science teacher, where I learned how bold leadership can transform lives. Over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of serving Nebraskans—first on the Omaha Public Schools Board of Education, then as a Nebraska State Senator, and most recently as a Congressional candidate in one of the nation’s most competitive districts. From advocating for stronger education, job creation, and expanded healthcare, to fighting for small businesses and affordable housing, I’ve worked hard to create opportunities for everyone. But I know there’s so much more to be done, especially when it comes to elevating the voices of those who have too often been overlooked.
Running for Congress myself in one of the nation’s most contested races in deeply red Nebraska, I gained a true understanding of the power of community—especially in places where people feel overlooked by the political system. We worked to engage voters across the political spectrum, many of whom felt disconnected. What I learned is that building genuine connections—listening, sharing stories, and finding common ground—was at the heart of our campaign. In a time of deep division, this approach didn’t just help us reach voters; it brought them together. While we fell short by just 1.9% of the vote, we were one of the top 5 closest races against a Republican incumbent in the House of Representatives. Throughout this journey, Square One helped us build the capacity we needed—through volunteers and fundraising—while also keeping us grounded in our vision and purpose. That’s why I’m excited to join them now. Square One understands that our greatest strength lies in the why behind our campaigns and the authenticity of our mission.
The values my parents, proud Latino immigrants, instilled in me guide my work: no matter how difficult the road ahead, we can find a way forward when we stay grounded in our values and stay focused on the future. These values are at the heart of Square One’s mission: to elect diverse leaders who will fight for progress and opportunity—and to break down the systemic barriers that prevent candidates from running for office and connecting with their communities. Square One is committed to helping candidates build authentic relationships with voters and lead with integrity—with the goal of electing a Congress that truly reflects America and the communities it serves.
In a time when our country feels divided, we need hope and action—and we need leaders who can bring us together. These leaders represent the future of our democracy—leaders who will advocate for the policies that reflect our values and address the pressing needs of our time, including healthcare access, climate change, reproductive rights, economic opportunity and much more.
If you believe, as I do, in the power of bold, diverse leadership in Congress—and in ensuring that candidates build real, community-rooted campaigns, I encourage you to support Square One’s work. Your time, talent, and financial support can help make this vision a reality.
To learn more and connect with the Square One team, join us for a virtual gathering to say “hi” on Zoom on Thursday, January 30 at 12pm ET / 9am PT.
As I step into this role, I’m filled with hope. The road ahead will be tough, but together, we can rise to the occasion and build a better future. Progress starts here—and I couldn’t be more excited to be part of this journey.
